The certification is available only through a Microsoft, authorized provider of Microsoft Instructional skills certification, and requires an annual renewal. For each course, a Microsoft Certified Trainer teaches, certification in the course being delivered is required/recommended as proof that the applicant has the required foundation of skills and competencies in any topic before taking on responsibilities of teaching that topic.

As the only professionals authorized to deliver training for Microsoft Certifications, Microsoft Certified Trainers, or MCTs, can be learning instructors, classroom or online learning teachers, group leaders, authors, facilitators or conference presenters.
